Chapter 13

“Beulah, look what came in the post today!” Silas enthused when he came in from work that evening. “It’s a sweeper.” He said, holding out a medium sized box.

“What is it for?” Beulah asked curiously, she had just finished polishing all of the pots and re-hanging them above the stove while a chicken roasted in the oven.

“For sweeping the rugs,” Silas said placing the box on the counter top and slicing through the twine.

In a few moments he had assembled the contraption using the instructions provided and was soon pushing the long handled rectangular box along the runner that led down the hall.

“You see, it has a little brush inside that whisks the dirt up into the box and when you’re done you simply open the box here and dump all of the dirt out.”

Beulah smiled at the excitement in Silas’s eyes. She didn’t see how it worked any better than a broom and dust pan, but if it made him happy she’d use it.

“I think tomorrow we should do something special,” Silas said as they sat at the dinner table. “The weather has been so fine. What do you say to a picnic?”

Beulah looked up, a soft smile on her lips. “In the garden?” she asked.

“No, a real picnic,” Silas stated. “We’ll hire a carriage and go for a drive. There are some lovely places along the creek that we could enjoy.”

“That sounds wonderful,” Beulah agreed. “I can pack up chicken sandwiches with the leftovers from tonight, and we can even take some of the peach pie I made for dessert.”

“I’ll fetch the basket after dinner,” Silas enthused. “I don’t think it’s ever been used.” He smiled, reaching out and squeezing Beulah’s hand making her warm all over.

She hadn’t known when she stepped onto the train a mere three weeks ago that she was going to get such a generous man.

True she worked hard keeping his house spotless, and looking after his little appliances, but she was blessed to have found someone who had such an open heart.

Sunday church was a welcome event for everyone in Helpful. With the warm weather more families than ever were able to attend and Beulah met neighbors she hadn’t seen yet.

It was almost with reluctance that she left her friends and joined Silas in the rented buggy, but soon the warm sun on her face, and the soft lilt of bird song pulled her into the moment.

“When I was a boy, my father would sometimes drive down to the stream just to get outside a bit,” Silas said. “He said he wasn’t used to being shut up in a store all the time and that he needed to drink in a bit of nature now and again.”

Beulah could see the happy memories playing in Silas’s mind, and it made her smile.

They found a place under a grove of choke cherry trees and spread an old table cloth on the ground.

Beulah unpacked the basket while Silas gazed around him. She could tell he was enjoying the freedom of being outdoors, and she too liked the feel of the warm sun on her skin.
